October 11

We had a busy week with many highlights!  We began the week with our Fire Safety field trip to the Morrisville Fire Station.  Unfortunately the rain put a damper on our  time at the Community Playground at the Graded Building, but we did get to ride a bus, which as a highlight for many who do not normally ride the bus.  While at the fire station we learned about fire safety, tried on fire fighter gear, enjoyed a snack and toured the firetrucks!  A huge shout out to the Morrisville fire fighters who took time out of their busy lives to spend the morning with us.

Our focus this week was on scholarly habits.  Students learned about Mindset (fixed vs. growth) with our favorite story book character Pete the Cat!  In the book Pete the Cat, I love my White Shoes we witness how Pete the Cat does not let things get him down.  He has a positive attitude no matter what happens to to his white shoes.  We learned how Pete the Cat is a great example of someone with a positive (growth) mindset.   Later in the week we learned about another scholarly habit: Collaboration.  We read the book Frankline's Secret Club.  In this story we learn how collaboration gets everyone what they want and everyone ends up happy.  Students then worked collaboratively to design and draw a clubhouse.  In the process of collaboration we learn that listening to one another is  the key to success and happiness.

In Math we learned how to write the number 8, learned about hidden partners (2 and 3 are hiding inside 5; 4 and 1 are hiding inside 5, etc), and we learned a strategy for counting in a circular array.

On Friday we were treated to our first Farm to School lesson with Miss. Molly.  Molly read us a book about sunflowers and then students worked to pull seeds out of sunflowers that last year's kindergarten students planted in our school garden.  In the Spring we will plant the sends to grow new sunflowers.  We were treated to Sunbutter, sunflower seeds and carrots for a snack.  Yum!

We concluded our week with an all school "Dance in the Halls" lobo loop celebration!

On Monday, I may or may not be a school, as I have been summoned to Jury Duty.  I won't know if I have to go on Monday or not until Sunday at 5:00 pm.  In the event I am not there, and the door is still locked in the morning when they arrive, students who normally have breakfast can eat in the cafeteria or the library cafe.  Other students should go to Ms. Gales classroom until a guest teacher arrives (usually by 7:45am).
