Week 21

It ended up being a short 3 day week with a poor weather day on Thursday.   This week we completed our Fundations Lowercase letters work.  We read and different version of The Mitten by Alvin Tresselt.  We used a venn diagram to compared and contrasted the two versions of The Mitten (Jan Brett vs. Alvin Tresselt).  During Writers Workshop Students worked on their narratives.  Lessons focused on using vowels when writing words.

I sent home a sheet of sight words (in Friday folder) for your child to practice at home. These can be cut up and used like flashcards or you could play games with them.  If you make a copy and have two sets your child could play memory.  You can also hide the words around the house and have your child go on a word hunt.  Another idea is to have a word of the day.  Tape it to a prominent  place such as a door or the refrigerator.  Every time the child goes past the word they stop and read the word.  You could also pick a word and then have the child look through a book to find the word as many times as he or she can.

We completed our math unit on comparing.  During this unit we began with comparing length and then weight.  We then move into identifying 1 more and 1 less, followed by comparing sets to tell a set that is more or less.  We ended with comparing numbers.

In Science we are learning about how animals survive in the winter.  We have identified three ways in which animals survive the winter.  They Hibernate, migrate, or adapt and stay active.  This week we acted out animals either migrating, hibernating, or staying active.  Students should be able to tell what it means to migrate, and hibernate, and ways an animals may adapt to stay active during the winter (grow thicker fur, change color, change diet. )

Announcements!
We will celebrating our 100th day for school on February 7th.  All students will be creating a 100th day project to share among the grade level.  Projects will be created at school.  We will be planning these next week.  You may be asked to bring in materials for your kindergartener to use to make their project.  We will also have a special 100th day snack.  I will be asking families to donate items needed for our snack.  Requests will go home next week.

Community Dinner and Math Night is next Thursday, January 31st.  All families are encouraged to attend.  Students will bring home materials to play math games at home.

No School Friday, Feb. 1st, as teachers will have professional development.

Our next ECO is Friday Feb. 8th.  Let me know if you can volunteer your time or bring firewood.
