During our last week before winter break, students learned how to write the letters M and N. We finished our narrative unit in writers workshop with most students publishing one of their stories, and we finished assessing reading levels.
In math we decomposed (take apart) numbers 6, 7, and 8. Students used number bonds and number sentences to decompose numbers using pictures, stories and cube sticks.
I also assessed student's knowledge on animals in winter. At this time students should be able to identify an animal or animals that hibernate, migrate and stay active in the winter. In Addition students should be able to define hibernate, migrate and what an animals who stays active does to adapt to winter conditions. Some students may also be able to tell why animals hibernate (lack of food), migrate (to stay warm, or find food), or adapt (grow thicker fur to stay warm, change diet as food sources change, or change color to camouflage).
Last fall the kindergarten teacher applied for and were awarded a Special Projects mini grant through CLiFF. We used the funds to purchase Yoga books and and Yoga materials to enhance our practice on building mindfulness into our curriculum. The photos here show students doing some animal poses while reading the book Zen Zoo by Kristen Fischer.

On Thursday we celebrated our class lobo loop challenge with a sledding party followed by hot chocolate!
We spent much of Friday with our Buddies! We began the day doing a STEM activity with our buddies to explore reflecting the suns energy to warm up a town which was built in the shadows of tall mountains. Then we spent the afternoon doing winter carnival stations with our Buddies! What a beautiful day we had!
