March 16

Snowshoe trek

We began the week with science lesson taught by three very capable PAML students (one of them a former student of mind!). These lessons, with a focus on environmental stewardship, will continue for the next 5 weeks  On Monday Students learned the importance of reducing, recycling, reusing, and composting.

In literacy this week we learned the letter formation for O, P, Q and R.  Students continue to build their skills on segmenting and blending words (to read and spell).  During writer's workshop students began researching their nature name animals for our animal reports.  Student are using a combination of books on iPads and books from the library to find information about what what their animal looks like, what it eats, where it lives, what it does in the winter, and then finding an interesting fact.  We are using a graphic organizer to collect information.

In math our lessons focused on putting together (composing) and taking apart (decomposing) numbers 5, 6, and 7 suing number bonds and equations (number sentences).

Thanks to Everett Dryden for coming in help with snowshoes on Thursday! I made it worth the effort by taking the group after out to animal track following .  It was a beautiful day to be outside and was happy to be out with the children.

We were treated to a wonderful pre-spring day at our ECO sight on Friday morning.  Thanks to parent volunteers Karen Simon and Amanda LaRock.  Students learned about the Great Horned Owl.  Students worked to create owl nest in which they had to protect their "eggs" from the old north wind and the hungry bald eagle.  We played a hind and seek game called owl eyes, and enjoyed forest choice activities: snow kitchen, snow painting, playing owl, and tree tea.
