During our third week of school we began using a math menu. This is a new format for me this year and I am learning from other teachers as I go. Basically all students will start at the carpet with a mini lesson. Then we transition into our math menu where students will choose a math center from menu. The idea is that they will visit all the centers throughout the week. The centers will allow them the opportunity to practice and play with our math skills. Last week we focused on number concepts and number formation up 1-5. During our math menu time, students will also have must do work to complete and may get pulled to work with a math tutor or me on a particular skill we notice they need to work on. I am excited about this new format as it will provide students more choice and opportunity to practice and play with the concepts we are working on so that math instruction becomes more student centered than teacher centered.
In Literacy, we learned about the letters Ff and Bb. We sorted by beginning sounds and learned the letter formation for both letters.
During writer's workshop our focus was on persevering and continuing to work. Students learned a method for writing words by stretching out the words and then writing what they hear. This could look like very different things for different children. Some may write a squiggle or humps to represent words, while others may write a letter or a string of letters to represent a word. Our focus is in creating independent writers with the courage to write even when you are not sure of how to do it. Research shows that when we tell students how to write or spell words they struggle to become independent writers as they rely on an adult to keep writing, which just does not work in a classroom setting. In a students centered writing program, as students write, they learn as they go, refining their skills as they are ready.
in Writer's workshop, we practiced reading books independently, looking at the pictures and "reading" what we see. We also learned how to partner read; sharing our books with a peer.
All students have been cleared for technology use, and next week we will be competing our digital citizenship lessons.
Our first ECO will take place the morning of September 30th from 9:30 - 11:00. This is an introductory lesson. No parent volunteers are needed.
