Math Game Night and ECO

We began the week learning about how to be safe around our camp fire during E.C.O..   Students also learned about the three types of wood we use to build a fire:   They are "mouse tails" (very little sticks), "chickadee sticks"(small sticks), and "beaver sticks" (larger sticks).  On Monday we went out into the forest and students collected sticks and practiced building a pretend fire.   We also did some math using sticks and pinecones and then did a little writing while in our quiet sit spots.   On Friday, we had E.C.O. with Miss Carrie from the North Branch Nature Center.   We had a first campfire and learned about animal habitats.  Students became animal detectives and searched for animal habitats around our forest classroom.  Unfortunately I forgot to bring my camera, so no pictures this week.


During Literacy we learned about the letters a and g and we learned the new sight words it and is.  Students read a new book titled: What Is It?.   During literacy groups, students worked on letter names and sounds to build fluency,  phonological skill such as: beginning sounds, segmenting words and blending words, and well as clapping the word parts (syllables).  Students are also doing guided reading using leveled reading books.   During writer's workshop, students began writing stories about an event in their lives (personal narratives).  

In math we worked on composing a decomposing (finding the hidden partners) numbers 8 and 9 and learned how to write the numbers 8 and 9 as well.   We worked on counting objects using a rectangular array, a circular array, and a scattered arrangement.  We are also practicing counting to 100 and reading numbers to 100 to find patterns in numbers.

There was a large turnout for the Community Dinner and Math Game Night on Thursday, with several families from our class attending.   Children who attended the math night went home with a a bag of math games and materials to play at home.   Playing games together is a great way to help your child gain mathematical skills and knowledge, while spending quality time together having fun!
