During our three days we read the folktale The Mitten retold by Jan Brett. Students retold the story using a story map. We talked about the setting of the story and the who the characters in the story are. Students were expected to tell the main events in the story as well as make inferences during classroom discussions. Later in the week we read another version on the story told by Alvin Tresselt. Then we compared and contrasted the two versions of the same folktale.
We also learned three new sight words: am, are, in, and read a new sight word book titled We Are.
During our math lessons our focus was the concept of enough, more than enough, and fewer than enough.
Additionally, we learned that hibernation is one of the animal adaptations for winter survival. This is the beginning of our next theme; Animals in the Winter. During this unit, students will learn about the various ways animals in VT adapt to winter (and relate it to how our human behaviors also change during the winter). Each student will be doing an animal research projects as part of this unit.
ECO: Our next ECO lesson will be Friday, January 19th from 1:00 - 2:30 (note this is a shorter lesson due to colder January, temperatures.) Please let me know if you could donate a couple of pieces of firewood or if you are able to volunteer that afternoon.
