April 27

It appears Spring has finally arrived!  It is amazing to think that April is nearly over, and we are down to our last 6 weeks of school!  What a busy time of year it is.   Kindergarten families should know that our last day of school will be Tuesday June 11th, as we will be hosting our kindergarten registration for incoming kindergarteners on June 12th and 13th.  For those of you with older students, their last day will be Friday June 14th. 

We will be having a  writing celebration and graduation ceremony during the afternoon on June 11th.  More information will be forthcoming.
This week we worked on letter formation for letters V and W.  We learned the consonant digraph /ck/.  Students should now be familiar with  /sh/, /ch/, /th/, /wh/, and /ck/. 

During writer's workshop, students are writing their animal reports about their nature names.  We will be sharing these with you during our Writing Celebration on June 11th. 

In math we worked on decomposing and composing number 9 using stories and drawings.  Students are representing number stories with number bonds and equations.

In Science we are learning about force and motion.  This week we focused on Types of Interactions: When objects touch or collide, they push on one another and can change motion. (NGSS: K-PS2-1).
On Friday we played a fun game called Human Bumper Bowling where students used books as bumpers to move a ball down an lane to knock down "pins" (cups).  This was a lot of fun!  Students had to use communication and cooperation to successfully knock down pins.

On Monday we had our fifth TRY lesson with our PAML student teachers.  This week we learned about the importance of composting food scraps rather than throwing food scraps in the trash.  Students learned what items can be composted and the process of decomposition and how decomposers, such as worms, help the process.

               Friday May 17 9:00 - 12:00 (let me know if you wish to volunteer)
               Monday June 3rd 9:00 - 12:00 - Final ECO Celebration  (All classes participate and rotate through 4 activities)  We need a parent volunteer who would be willing to take charge of starting and maintaining a fire at the campfire station.  Let me know if this is something you would be willing to do.
