Week 6

What a busy and exciting week we had with our first field trip, Open House, and E.C.O..

During literacy we learned the letter, keyword, and sound for letters c and o.  We also learned how to write the letters on the handwriting grid (sky line, plane line, grass line, worm line).  Due to our field trip and ECO lessons we will continue with these two letters and review the other letters learned next week.

We read a new sight word book, titled Setting the Table.  The new sight word is the.

During readers workshop we focused on reading picture books by "reading the pictures".  Students learned that they need to think about what the characters are thinking and feeling.

During Writers Workshop students are working on writing books that teach.

Our math lessons focused on finding hidden partners in a number, reading a number expression ( 3+1, 2+3, etc.), and the numbers zero and seven.

We learned a lot about fire Safety this week.  Students learned that they need to have two exits from every room or building, smoke detectors alert us there is a fire and to get out and stay out.  Every family should have an evacuation plan.  Please discuss with your child where they should meet if there were a fire (mailbox, tree, by the car, neighbors house etc.)  Students also learned to call 911 for an emergency and we practiced what to say.  Additionally students learned to stop drop and roll if their clothes were to catch on fire, crawl low under the smoke and to feel the door with the back of their hand  before opening it.

Our ECO lesson this week began our focus on living things and how they survive.  Students used materials in the forest to create mouse houses.  During forest choice time students enjoyed using magnifying glasses and bug boxes to explore the forest, some children played a fun math game our North Branch Nature Center consultant, Carrie Riker, and others played by pretending to be their nature name animal.  It was a very successful first full ECO session.

It was a bit cool Friday morning and not all students came prepared to be outdoors for 3 hours in that temperature.  I had to pull out quite a few pairs of mittens, and hats and extra layers for students to wear.  It will only get colder from here, so PLEASE be sure to  help your child be prepared by sending extra layers, warm coats (and or rain coats), hats, mittens and boots as needed.  Rain pants will help keep your child dry and comfortable and snow pants will be necessary once we have snow.

It was great to see so many families at Open House on Thursday evening!  Thank you for taking the time to come see what your child has been learning about.  They were so so excited to able to show you their classroom and school.

Thank you to our chaperones on Thursday morning for our Field trip to the fire station and thank you to our parent volunteers for ECO on Friday morning. Having parent volunteers helps us offer special events and programing.

At our community meeting on Friday morning the school filled the Lobo Loop bucket, earning our school the first school wide celebration!  On Friday afternoon the school was called to the gymnasium where we were treated to a Dance Party and Popsicles!  Way to go MES Students for all your effort and bering caught doing the right things so many times (Thousands...).
