Week 9

We had our first campfire this week!

We had another busy week in Kindergarten!

In literacy learned about the letters e and r.  Students learned the letter name, keyword, and sound as well as how to write the letter using the Fundations writing grid.  We have learned about half of the alphabet at this point.  We practice using what we know about letter sounds to identify the beginning sound in a word.  We practice finding letters on a alphabet grid by listening to the sound and then find the letter that matches that sound.

During literacy groups, students are practicing using early literacy foundational skills and reading leveled book.  During our guided reading lessons, students are working on concepts of print, identifying sight words, and using pictures and looking at beginning sounds to help us figure out word.

During writer's workshop students began writing a true story.

In Math students are working on numbers 8 and 9.  We learned how to write the numbers, counting strategies, subitizing (seeing the quantity without counting all the dots), and noticing the hidden partners in a number.

We also began our first science unit this week!  Students are learning about living and non-living things. In the unit we will focus on what living things need to survive and how to identify a living things from a non-living thing.  Lessons this week focused on how animals behaviors demonstrate how they find food and make shelter.  In our ECO Lesson we discovered how the red fox communicates using its senses, body language, vocalizations, and facial features,  to gets its needs met.

Announcements:
Gluten Free Students:  There are 2 Gluten Free students in our class this year as well as myself.  I tell you this so you are aware when you send in special snacks for the class for Birthdays and other celebrations.  We want all students to feel included in celebrations.  You are welcome to send cupcakes or cookies for special celebrations if you can assure they are Gluten Free.  Other alternative ideas are popsicles, popcorn, fresh fruit, or veggies and dip as a special snack.  Thanks for your consideration.

Halloween evokes a lot of excitement.  While we want children to enjoy this fun time of year, I want to remind you that keeping a normal routine and learning environment at school is important for our learners.  Please do not send students to school in their Halloween costumes and refrain from sending students with candy for snack.
