During our seventh week of Kindergarten, students were busy expanding their knowledge of letters and sounds, reading, writing, and mathematics.
In Literacy we began doing small groups! During this time students will be working with 3-5 other children on focused literacy skills. Students participate in guided reading lessons using leveled books. These lessons work on early reading skills such as, reading the pictures, making connections to information we already know about a topic, finding familiar words, and following the words on a page, and comprehension. As children become more proficient these skills they become more automatic. Children are also practicing phonics (matching letters and sounds), beginnings sounds, letter names and sounds, and letter formation. Additionally, students learned how to sign into a program we use on iPads called Lexia Core 5. Click the link to find out more about Lexia Core 5. https://www.lexialearning.com/products/core5.
During writers workshop students are writing books that teach. During readers workshop, lessons focused on how to pick a book, looking at the pages slowly and closely, and putting the book away respectfully.
Our math lessons this week focused on decomposing (taking apart) the numbers 4 and 5, ordering numbers, and working with the quantity of 6 as one more than 5.
We are finishing up our All About Me unit by making a Guess Who posters. Students are creating self portraits and are telling clues about themselves for others to guess who the page is about.
